Soccer is the world's sport and it doesn't seem to be changing anytime in the near future. I knew that but I chose to only watch when it was convenient. I guess you could call me a fair-weather soccer fan. However, that all changed this weekend. After watching the UEFA Champions League match on Saturday, my full fledge soccer fan-boy is in full swing. The game was unbelievable and we wanted to understand it from a social perspective as well.
Because soccer is the most popular sport in the world, advertisers' have been flocking to get in on the soccer action. The teams, tv spots, and players have the ability to reach people all over the world in one sitting. Soccer almost touches every individual in the world. At the ExactTarget Social Media Lab, we wanted to understand the true impact of the Champions League game on the social media landscape and the opponents, Chelsea and Bayern. And on Saturday, we took notes.
- Over 1.2 million tweets during the match
- Roberto Di Matteo was the top tweeted coach with 24,983 tweets
- Samsung declared victors as top tweet sponsor with over 90% of the sponsor tweets
- The top re-tweeted tweet have 7015 Retweets
- Great Britain led the countries with the most tweets at 22.83%
- Majority of the Tweet were in English with 68%

At the lab we tracked the conversation from 12pm (5/14) to 7:00 pm (4/19) EST . We ranked Twitter mentions for teams, sponsors, players, and countries. We pulled the data and analyzed it to be displayed visually.
